How do I assess the Value of my Parent's House

Posted on 24 September 2010 by Duncan Ironside

I would like to buy my parents house, but also want to make sure I am not overpaying. They have had the usual bait and sale tactic of overvaluation from a real estate agent and feel this is what the house is worth. How do we come to a good compromise without them and I feeling unfairly treated.

I recommend that you use a property comparison site like

These sites will allow you to see the prices of similar properties in the area that have sold and also get an estimate of the current value of property in the area.

Both you and your parents should seek independent legal advice regarding the sale to protect yourselves and to make sure that you do not land yourselves with a potentially large tax bill.
