I'm an expat and am planning my return to the UK. I want to self-build and thus need a mortgage to do so. I will permanenetly relocate when the house is completed and it'll be my main residence. Can I get a mortgage to do this?
I regret that the self build market has been one of the victims of the credit crunch and the number of lenders willing to back such projects has drastically reduced. Of those remaining, I am not aware of any who will consider lending to someone without a 3 year credit and address history in the UK.
However, depending on who you bank with, your terms of employment, overall financial standing and level of assets, there are some lenders who may be willing to consider a bespoke mortgage package for you and for this reason I recommend that you speak to an independent mortgage broker with experience of both commercial and private finance arrangements.
