My partner uses a double barrelled name (his father's surname then his mother's) - he has done since his parents split up. This is the name on our mortgage loan offer but his identification doesn't exactly match (it's just in his original surname, not barrelled). Our lender seems to think we're trying to commit fraud - we're not!!! Do we start again and apply in the non-double barrelled name? (but his pay slips are in the double barrelled name so would this even work?) Help!
All lenders have a duty under current money laundering regulations to satisfy themselves that the applicant is who they say they are and one of the ways that they do this is to check the names on the application match official documentation held by the applicant. The usual documents used for this are:
A valid full passport; or
A valid UK Photo-card driving licence; or A valid H M Forces identity card with the signatory's photograph If your partner has adopted a double barrelled surname he should change his name by deed poll and then get his passport changed, followed by all his other records such as bank account, voters roll, driving licence, credit cards and utilities.
Until then you still have the problem with your current application and you need to speak to the manager to find out what they will accept to satisfy themselves. If your partner can not produce any Government or Inland Revenue documentation ask whether they would accept a declaration signed by a solicitor or other official stating that they know him personally and can vouch for his identity. It might be that his parents have a family friend who can do this for him.
I do not think that applying again in his sole name would help, especially with another lender. In this case the original lender would probably register a credit industry fraud caution on his credit file and this would mean he would find it hard to ever get a mortgage.
