Hundreds of thousands of taxpayers have until midnight this Thursday to file their tax return and pay any money that they owe.

Anyone who misses the 31 January deadline faces a £100 fine, and may also have to pay interest on the full amount of unpaid tax.

According to HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC), more than 10% of people who fell under the self-assessment scheme failed to meet last year's deadline, with 150,000 returns filed in the 24 hours before the deadline.

However, numbers this year are about a quarter up on the same point last year. HMRC says that 489 people even filed online on Christmas Day.

Anyone who plans to file online at the last minute will find themselves unable to do so unless they have used the service before, or obtained a PIN number from HMRC. This can only be sent by post, which normally takes seven days.

Speaking to BBC News, an HMRC spokesperson said that expecting a PIN to arrive in time for a late filing would be "cutting it very fine".
