Probe into private rental sector

Housing minister Yvette Cooper has announced a major review into the private home lettings sector.
The independent review will examine the demographic makeup of landlords and tenants, and how the sector has been affected by the increasing number of student tenants and buy-to-let properties.
In June 2006 a Citizens Advice report found that some private landlords were using a loophole in the law to evict tenants who requested repairs or renovations. The government points out that, on the other hand, landlords can face problems with some tenants' anti-social behaviour or failure to pay rent.
The review will be chaired by Julie Rugg and David Rhodes from York University's Centre for Housing Policy.
"Most of us have rented a flat or house at some stage in our lives and the private rented sector is, at its best, a vital provider of good housing," said Yvette Cooper. "We have seen a big increase in the private rented sector and particularly in buy to let. It is important we review the impact of this," she added.
The review begins immediately, and is expected to publish its final report by October.
