Charcol drops fee for mortgage advice

Charcol has announced that it has dropped fees for mortgage advice given over the phone.

The move brings the mortgage broker's telephone service in line with its fee-free online advice, and applies to mortgages across the UK market.

Chief executive Ian Kennedy said that with many lenders having tightened their criteria over recent months, borrowers were less sure who would lend to them. "There is a general nervousness in the market and borrowers are starting to really question whether they have the right home loan," he said.

"The need for expert mortgage advice has arguably never been more apparent than now, with mortgages consistently at the front of … many people's minds and the front pages of newspapers."

Competitor firm L&C Mortgages said that it welcomed the move by Charcol: "With an ever more complex mortgage market, access to whole-of-market mortgage advice is now required more than ever," said spokesperson David Hollingworth.
